The "Concussion Management and Awareness Act"; directs the commissioners of education and health to adopt and implement rules and regulations for the treatment and monitoring of students with mild traumatic brain injuries. It also requires school personnel to receive training in mild traumatic brain injuries; such rules and regulations shall apply to school districts and boards of cooperative educational services.
Requirements of School Districts
Education: Each school coach, physical education teacher, nurse, and athletic trainer will have to complete an approved course on concussion management on a biennial basis, starting with the 2012-2013 school year.
The link to the approved course is below. Once the course is completed, a downloadable certificate will be immediately available. Coaches must e-mail this certificate to Cody Delles, AD. You don't have to worry about keeping a copy for yourself, because the certificate will be available in your profile. Remember, you must take this course every two years - just like your CPR/AED training.

Certain professionals are required by law to report suspected child abuse or maltreatment to the New York State Central Register (SCR) of Child Abuse and Maltreatment. The law also assigns civil and criminal liability to those professionals who do not comply with their mandated reporter responsibilities.
Coaches are required to complete a
2-hour web-based online training course which can be accessed at any time, 24/7. Users have 30 days to complete the course. Progress is saved at the end of each section, so you can complete it at your own pace. Interactive exercises are customized for the major disciplines: Social Services, Education, Law Enforcement, Child Day Care, and Medical are included. Users also learn definitions, indicators, and how to make a report to the New York Statewide Central Register. The course is user friendly, fully narrated, and includes taped video segments that enhance learning points. This course meets the New York State Education Department mandatory requirements for Training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting.
At the end of the course, the participant will be emailed a certificate of completion. Please email this to Cody Delles, AD. This information must also be entered in the TEACH account.

On July 24, 2000, Governor Pataki signed into law the above act. Part of this legislation mandated that coaches complete a 2 hour workshop entitled "School Violence Prevention and Intervention."

As of January 1, 2014, all non-teacher coaches and persons applying for new certification on TEACH must complete the DASA Workshop. The workshop is 6 hours: three of the hours require attendance at a workshop. The remaining 3 hours are completed on-line. The objectives of the course include the following:
*Understanding the Dignity Act
*Knowing the reporting requirements
*Learning early warning signs of bullying, harassment, and discrimination
*Prevention of the above.
The registration fee is $70 for the course offered through BOCES. The course offered by Section V is FREE.
